Well August,

Despite being absolutely awful in June and July, August as been a lot kinder weatherwise, and if our winter power bill is anything to go by, it's been warmer than in past years, even if it hasn't felt like it.

I've cut my grass (twice, actually) and the birds are definitely getting into spring mode. The days are getting warmer, and the garden (and the weeds) is starting to come back to life.

It's not all been plain sailing though - last week we had a bout of truly horrid weather,

but we're back to pleasantly warm afternoons, even if we get close to freezing some nights.

Our apricot and crab apple trees are blossoming and in the bush around town the wattles are in full blossom and the plum and apple trees that jumped the fence are also blossoming.

Normally, our local supermarket puts out a display of tomato seedlings in the first or second week of September, but they were putting them out on display last week despite it not being September yet.

Given what's been happening in the northern hemisphere there's an obvious worry about whether this is a harbinger of a hot dry summer of bushfires and smoke, or indeed if this signifies a change to a hotter drier climate.

Climate change is a trend rather than an event, so we'll only be able to tell a few years down the track, but so far it's a teensy bit worrying ...
