Vegetable cage built

Last night we had a storm which finally got rid of the hot muggy weather that made Beechworth reminiscent of Borneo, to replace it with something more like what we expect here in early summer on the edge of the Victorian Alps.

This gave me a chance to knock together my very basic vegetable cage to protect our zucchini and chili plant from the possums

very crude, but designed to be reusable/recyclable.

Essentially it consists of three pairs of 120cm plastic coated metal garden stakes spaced a metre apart with the tops of the hoops made out of an old length of damaged garden hose.

Each hose section is secured at both ends by minature hose clips (available from any serious hardware store - you need the 6-12mm ones - and some standard gauge plastic mesh round the base.

Over the whole thing is a sheet of bird netting.

Here in Victoria we're only allowed to use 5mm netting to avoid accidentally trapping native birds and any small scurrying things.

The bird netting is secured with cable ties, and as you can see there's a loose flap held closed with some bits of broken concrete tile to allow access.

At the end of the season it will be easy to dismantle and store for reuse next spring, and the only loss will be the cable ties, everything else can be reused or repurposed...
